29 FEB 16 CPD RELEASE – Gang Enforcement Missions

CPD ARRESTS SEVENTY-FOUR IN GANG ENFORCEMENT MISSIONS
CHICAGO – The Chicago Police Department, in partnership with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), recently conducted a Narcotics Unified Enforcement Mission in the 11th and 15th Districts to strike at the heart of gang operations. Specific areas were targeted in the districts based upon historical crime incidents, known locations of narcotics sales, vice complaints, and known areas of street gang activity. Arrests as a result of the narcotics and vice missions totaled 74, with 32 of the offenders being documented gang members. Of the total arrests, 60 of the offenders are listed on the Department’s Strategic Subject List (SSL). The SSL is an algorithm which calculates the propensity of an individual to be a victim of gun violence in their
lifetime. This score is based upon previous contact with police, known affiliations with gang members, and geographic location.

The missions resulted in the seizure of:
• Eight (8) weapons
o (1) MAC-11 Machine Pistol
o (1) 9mm Handgun
o (1) .40cal Handgun
o (2) .38cal Handgun
o (1) .45cal Handgun
o (2) .22cal Handgun
• Four (4) vehicles
• 205 packs of unstamped cigarettes
• Over $13,000 in US Currency

“The Chicago Police Department will remain steadfast in its mission to weaken street gangs by targeting their operations,” said Chicago Police Interim Superintendent John Escalante. “By removing their sources of funding we can make it harder for them to sustain their activities and make the streets of Chicago safer.”  This mission is the latest in a series of targeted enforcements previously announced by CPD to curtail gang violence in Chicago. This operation is another example of the commitment of ATF to the Chicago Police Department and our federal partners in having an impact on firearms violence in the City of Chicago,” said ATF Special Agent in Charge Jeffery Magee.
