Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Interim Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson are announcing that more than 450 body cameras are being shipped to Chicago this week as part of the Chicago Police Department’s body-worn camera pilot program.

Once training is complete, the cameras will be worn by officers and supervisors on all three watches in seven police districts participating in the pilot program. The cameras will be able to record audio and video, and save up to 72 hours on a single charge in high-definition. The first phase of the camera program has been successfully underway in the Shakespeare Police District, and now will expand to Austin, Wentworth, Deering, Ogden, South Chicago, and Gresham – covering one-third of the city.

On Friday, October 2, 2015, Family Rescue, a domestic violence agency that provides shelter, counseling, community outreach and court advocacy to victims and survivors of domestic violence, in collaboration with the Chicago Police Department’s 003rd and 4th Districts hosted the 14th Annual Domestic Violence March.

The event began and ended in the heart of the South Chicago community at Bessemer Park. Inside the field house representatives from Family Rescue, CPD Community Policing Officers, NOBLE, YWCA of Metropolitan Chicago, Juan Diego Community Center, and the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office were among the community organizations that provided resources to the participants.

The march, led by members of the Chicago Police Department’s Mounted Unit, made its way through residential and commercial areas of South Chicago as marchers made their strong stance against domestic violence known.

The evening ended with a candlelight vigil led by Pastor Monte and a balloon release. The event is one of many planned in October in honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
