This alert gives notice to residents residing in the 6th district (Gresham) of robberies that occurred between 16 July 2016 and 19 July 2016. In these incidents two to three unknown male black offenders approached the victim(s) and displayed a handgun and demanded money or anything of value. The offenders may be driving a silver van or black SUV.

• On July 5, 2016, at approximately 5:00 p.m. on the 7900 block of S. Ashland Avenue, the manager of the Family Dollar Store was shot and killed during a theft attempt.
Earlier this morning, at approximately 9:45 a.m., an off-duty Chicago Police Officer was driving on the 3500 block of North Damen Ave when he observed a female motorist open her car door in the path of a 21 year old male cyclist. The cyclist collided with the car door with significant force, causing a laceration to his neck. The officer immediately stopped to render aid and, seeing that the victim was losing a large amount of blood from his wound, was able to utilize his specialized training to apply pressure to the cyclist’s neck with a bandage and stemmed the bleeding until Chicago Fire Department personnel could arrive on scene.
The injured cyclist was subsequently taken to Illinois Masonic Hospital, where he is currently listed in serious but stable condition. The traffic crash remains under investigation.
Garcia was identified as the offender who stabbed the male victim, 30 during a verbal altercation on June 28, 2016 at approximately 12:54 a.m. on the 1700 block of W. 51st St. The victim was pronounced on scene. Jose Ortiz, 31 was arrested after he was identified as the person who shot and killed two men. This incident occurred on June 7, 2015, at approximately 3:50 a.m. in the 1600 block of N. Cicero Ave. Two males were driving when a vehicle pulled alongside and an occupant fired shots at the vehicle, striking both victims. A 19 year old man sustained a gunshot wound to the head and torso. The second man, 19 years old, sustained a gunshot wound to the torso. Both victims were taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition but later succumbed to their injuries. Ortiz was charged accordingly.
The Chicago Police Department will conduct a Roadside Safety Check in the Wentworth (2nd) District at Garfield Blvd. & Perry Ave. The Roadside Safety Check will commence at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, April 15, 2016 and end at 3:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 16, 2016.
